Silicomanganese alloy is a commonly used composite deoxidizer in steelmaking, as well as a reducing agent for the production of medium- and low-carbon ferromanganese and metallic manganese via the electro-silicothermic process. Both silicon and manganese in the alloy possess a strong affinity for oxygen; when used in steelmaking, the resulting deoxidation products offer advantages such as low melting points, large particle sizes, ease of flotation, and high deoxidation efficiency. Under identical conditions, the burn-off rates for deoxidation using manganese or silicon alone are 46% and 37% respectively, whereas with silicomanganese alloy, the burn-off rate for both elements is 29%.
